Joanne worked on a variety of different wards prior to her role in the community, elderly rehabilitation wards, medical assessment wards, also working for Greater Manchester Police as a custody nurse
What do they do?
As a staff nurse Joanne’s role was all about patient care and ensuring that best practice was used to holistically care for patient’s needs. Joanne is currently a team leader and patient care is essential, while also supporting her staff who look after the patients, Joanne sees this as a top priority. Working as a nurse provides job satisfaction, from admitting patients to the caseload to discharging them. Every day is different and you never know what you will come across, working in the community gives you a variety of patients, and not one is the same as the other. The most important role of a community nurse is looking after the patient in their own home and if that means when they become end of life and their wishes are to stay at home Joanne and her team will give the best care available to make them comfortable
What's the best thing about their role?
Joanne says the best part of her job is looking after patients and providing the best care possible, gaining the best outcome of making them feel better and getting the feeling of appreciation from the patients and relative’s you care for. Joanne wants to encourage all ages to join the Health & Social Care sector, as there are so many roles that not many people are aware of and you’re never too old to try. Joanne was 28 before she started her training and she is so glad that she did. From being a student Joanne has enjoyed all areas of her career, working with all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, multiple conditions; “it has definitely been the best decision of my life to join Health & Social Care”
Where are they going from here?
Joanne loves the role she does and always has plans for the future but she takes things one step at a time, who knows what, will happen!
