Callam is a Technical Support Apprentice in mechanical engineering, currently in his first year of a three year apprenticeship, working within Medical Equipment Management Services (MEMS) and based at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust
Callam left school with his GCSEs and completed an apprenticeship in car mechanics before completing a second apprenticeship in software development but still wasn’t sure at this stage what he wanted to pursue his career in. Callam then saw his current apprenticeship advertised on the NHS Jobs website, applying for the vacancy and successfully gaining his current role, after taking time to prepare for the interview using the guidance on the NHS Job website
Callam has already gained lots of training and experience whilst attending college as part of the apprenticeship programme, learning practical skills such as milling, turning and fitting of equipment to support him in his current role, giving him a sound understanding of the industry he is currently working within. Every day is different for Callam; he has daily emails that he needs to address as well as ensuring that equipment is serviced each day which is usually ward based. Callam has been trained to service different pieces of equipment such as airflow meters, suction controllers, nebulisers and blood pressure monitors, Callam has not only learnt about the equipment but also gained background information into what the equipment is used for on a daily basis. Callam also ensures that he makes time to complete any coursework that he has been set as part of his apprenticeship
Callam feels that the best thing about his role is the fantastic team that he works in, he feels that he has all the support he needs from his team to enable him to successfully complete his apprenticeship and continue his career within the NHS
Callam has already made plans to continue his career and is looking forward to completing his apprenticeship and progressing within his team, gaining further qualifications relevant to his role in MEMS
