Dawn left school and went to college successfully completing a Level 3 diploma in Early Years Education and Care, starting work straight away in a private nursery before being successful in her application to become a nursery nurse in her current role at MFT

What do they do?

As a nursery nurse Dawn regularly rotates around the 8 different rooms caring for children of all ages. Dawn works shifts as part of her role to fit in with the opening hours of the nursery which is 7:15am – 6:00pm. There is a nursery routine in place for the children, Dawn helps with meal times encouraging children to feed themselves. Dawn also plans activities for the children to ensure that they meet the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework including painting, sand play and story and singing time with musical instruments. Every child has their own observation book that Dawn completes for her key children to document the child’s development, interaction with other children and progress in their own development, this involves completing paperwork each day in order to document this important information feeding this back to parents as needed. Toys are cleaned on a regular basis by Dawn and her team documenting that cleaning has taken place, as well as documenting medicine that may be given to a child during the day, also changing nappies and encouraging children during toilet training.

What’s the best thing about their role?

Dawn feels that the NHS supports its staff and has completed courses in areas such as Paediatric First Aid, Child Behaviour and hygiene. Dawn has a few options in the future regarding progressing within her career and will look in to this further once her own children are a little older.
