What’s the story of their career to date?

Darren left school and began work as a paint sprayer, carrying out this role for a number of years before gaining a job with the Salford City Council. Whilst working for the council, Darren decided to go to night school to train as a gas engineer/plumber which took three years to do, after this he gained experience within this and was successful in an application to become a Gas Fitter/Plumber for three years before joining the NHS, before progressing into his current role of Workshop Supervisor

What do they do?

Darren has the responsibility of ensuring that all hospital related maintenance jobs logged via the switchboard are assessed and repaired by his team and specialised contractors. Maintenance repairs could include repairing doors and locks, shower repairs and drain blockages, light fitting and TV repairs as well as motor and steam pump maintenance. Darren has to prioritise the workload to ensure that repairs are done efficiently and within a reasonable time scale in order to meet the needs of the hospital and the excellent patient care provided. Darren has to order specific materials for repairs and he also liaises with contractors when they come on to the hospital site, carrying out a short induction that includes the health and safety of the site, attending weekly meetings and carrying out appraisals with his team

Darren feels the best part of his role has to be the NHS benefits that are available as an employee and being part of the NHS team

Where are they going from here?

Darren has had lots of training supported by the NHS enabling him to be the appointed person, responsible for managing the water safety on the hospital site. In the future Darren may consider progressing within his career if an opportunity arises that suits him
