Marie is a Nursing Assistant and works on a 20 bedded ward for adult males with mental health needs within the Greater Manchester Mental NHS Foundation Trust
Marie started her career as a beauty therapist before deciding to change her career to become a nursing assistant on a general ward in a hospital, moving into the area of mental health over 5 years ago. During her career with the NHS Marie has achieved an NVQ level 2 in General Healthcare and also the level 3 in Health and Social Care as well as the Award in Education and Training
Marie’s role can be different every day; she regularly attends a handover meeting to update on how the patients within the ward are doing. Marie also carries out observations which involve her watching and talking to patients who may be at risk of harming themselves or others, Marie then documents the observations that take place. Another part of her roles involves Marie escorting patients to appointments outside of the ward and carrying out activities with patients within the ward. Marie carries out physical health checks with patients recording their height, weight and BMI before documenting this information on the patient’s records, Marie is also a trainer within the trust and uses her knowledge and skills to train staff in areas such as conflict resolution, basic life support and Control and Restraint as part of a team of trainers
Marie feels that the best part of her job is to see a patient smile and watch them leave hospital after they have been so ill
Marie is hoping to complete a further qualification in team leading, supported by her manager, to further her career aspirations to date
