Stephanie - Apprentice Dental Nurse

Who’s this?

Stephanie is an apprentice dental nurse working in a local dental practice, she has always enjoyed going to the dentist so when she saw the apprenticeship vacancy in a local newspaper she felt she had to apply

What does their working week look like?

Stephanie works Monday to Friday 8.45am – 5.45pm and spends one day a week in the dental college

What do they do?

Stephanie finds her role really interesting, she ensures patient safety during procedures by using protective equipment, completes patient records and regularly works with dementia patients talking to them during procedures to make them feel at ease. Stephanie also takes photographs for the purpose of treatments which she really enjoys

What else are they getting out of it?

Within the Apprenticeship framework, Stephanie is working towards a Level 3Advanced Apprenticeship in Health - Dental Nursing and looking forward to achieving her general Dental Council registration

How are they supported?

Stephanie spends one day each week in the dental college and enjoys completing her course work both in college and in the evenings at home, she feels that she gets lots of extra support if she needs it form her assessor and tutor at the college

What’s the best thing about it?

Stephanie feels the best thing about being a dental nurse is looking after the patients and seeing them smile at the end of a treatment, she has worked with really nervous patients that she has supported very well during treatments

Where are they going from here?

Stephanie wants to progress by doing a post registration qualification in oral health and has aspirations to complete an access to science degree and eventually become a dentist
