Kathryn - Apprentice Dental Nurse

Who’s this?

Kathryn is an apprentice dental nurse working in a local dental practice; she has really enjoyed completing her apprenticeship after deciding to change careers after working in hospitality for some time

What does their working week look like?

Kathryn works Monday to Friday 9.00am – 5.30pm and spends one day a week in the dental college

What do they do?

Kathryn has different tasks throughout the week, setting up the trays for the dentist, retracting the patient’s cheeks during treatments to allow more space for the dentist to work and also filling cavities with amalgam for the dentist during procedures

What else are they getting out of it?

Within the Apprenticeship framework, Kathryn is working towards a Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Health - Dental Nursing and has also completed functional skills in Maths and English which will support her in her future career plans

How are they supported?

Kathryn uses her time wisely at college to enable her to complete her course work and with support from the college feels her confidence has grown. Kathryn’s team at her placement work well together which she really appreciates

What’s the best thing about it?

Kathryn has really enjoyed learning how to mix the different filling materials, using her manual dexterity to the best of her ability. Kathryn has learnt to mix alginate to the correct consistency which took her a while to master but is really proud of this skill she has learnt as well of now having a sound clinical understanding of procedures

Where are they going from here?

Kathryn would like to complete post registration qualifications in oral health and radiography
