Angeline - Advanced Practitioner, Ageing and Complex Medicine

Who's this?

Angeline is an Advanced Practitioner specialising in Ageing and Complex Medicine for Salford Care Organisation, part of The Northern Care Alliance NHS Group.

What’s the story of their career to date?

Angeline completed her GSCEs and became a multi-professional healthcare cadet, gaining a BTEC in Health Studies and a NVQ in Care. She decided to progress into nursing and completed a Diploma of Higher Education in Adult Nursing. She subsequently upgraded to a BSc in Nursing Studies whilst working in the role of Staff Nurse before progressing into Advanced Practice training. Angeline has recently qualified as an Advanced Practitioner, and now works in the care of older people specialty. “The NHS has supported me all the way throughout my career; providing me with both the necessary time and financial support to undertake further study.”

What do they do?

Angeline arrives at work early and liaises with the Consultant Geriatrician in order to identify any new patients admitted to the wards overnight. Her job is split equally between an acute medical ward, and delivering an in-reach service to older patients on the general surgical wards. She sees new patients, undertaking a comprehensive review and develops a plan to ensure their medical and nursing needs can be addressed during their hospital stay. Angeline also reviews existing patients on the wards, to identify any problems they may be encountering, undertaking a clinical examination, adjusting medications, ordering investigations and co-ordinating discharge planning where appropriate.

What is the best part about their role?

Angeline loves meeting new people, and finding out about their lives and experiences, what matters most to them and how she can best support them through their ill health. “No two days are the same, and every day we have the opportunity to really make a difference, sometimes even through the most simple tasks.”

Where are they going from here?

Angeline is happy with her role at present. “I know there is a lot I need to learn before I can think of progressing, but ultimately I would love to become a Nurse Consultant in my speciality. Research is also high on my priority list, and I hope to begin a PhD within the next few years.”
