Liam is a Physiotherapy Assistant in the muscolo-skeletal (MSK) Outpatients Department for Salford Care Organisation, part of The Northern Care Alliance NHS Group.
Liam worked as an Auxiliary Nurse in operating theatres for five years, two years in orthopaedics and then three years in The Christie Hospital in theatres doing oncology surgery. His main passion was exercise so he decided Physiotherapy was more suited to his skills. He asked the clinical lead of the physiotherapy department if he could help out on his days off and six months later he successfully gained a job as a Physiotherapy Assistant in the MSK Outpatients at Salford Royal.
Liam’s average day consists of covering hydrotherapy clinics which means helping patients get in and out of the pool safely, booking appointments and ensuring the changing rooms and pool area are safe. He also has his own clinic where he treats five patients at a time in two 30 mins slots in the pool. Liam also helps run gym classes with the physiotherapist managing the stop clock, helping people around the class, exercise instruction and dealing with questions from patients. His role also includes helping with admin, cleaning, patient appointments, equipment maintenance and a general assistance to support the physio team. “The Physio team are great and allow me to take part in lots of in service training. They are highly trained with lots of experience which helps me in my understanding and progression in my career.”
“I regularly see patients in my clinic with an injury that has taken away their mobility and loss of independence. I like observing the patients progress through their treatments, getting stronger, feeling more confident and getting out and about with the daily things we take for granted like nature walks or just travelling about. I’ve been given a chance to make a positive change to patients’ lives.”
“I’ve been very lucky as the team I work for have pulled together and agreed to grant me a one year career break. I plan to travel to Asia and volunteer with children and animals.”
