Kirstie is a HIV Clinical Nurse Specialist in The Northern Contraception, Sexual Health & HIV Service in partnership with Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust together with Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust
Kirstie graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2012 with a Masters of Nursing Science. Her first job was on an Infectious Diseases unit in London caring for individuals with different types of infectious diseases including TB, Meningitis, Malaria, Typhoid and HIV. She then worked on an Infectious Diseases unit in Sheffield during the Ebola outbreak. Kirstie had always wanted to work in HIV, so when the opportunity came up for a HIV Clinical Nurse Specialist role in Manchester, she jumped at the chance to work in her dream job
Kirstie’s days can be very varied, she does nurse clinics which include seeing people recently diagnosed with HIV and supporting them through this time, adherence to antiretroviral medication support and supporting pregnant patients. She visits patients on the wards working closely with the other healthcare professionals. A lot of her role is spent trying to re-engage people into their service, including providing telephone support
Kirstie really enjoys the role, her days are never the same; she feels it is a privilege to work closely with patients through difficult times. She enjoys being part of an innovative specialist nurse team. The team are always looking at ways to improve patient care which enables them to put patients first
Kirstie loves her role and wants to continue to develop her career within this area of nursing. She hopes in the future to do a Non-Medical Prescribing course and continue to assist in developing the HIV service
