James - Medical Administrator

Who’s this?

James is currently a medical administrator working within a Team that takes care of all administration duties for three practices based at Saint Andrews Medical Centre, working between Monday to Saturday covering the surgeries extended hours

What’s the story of their career to date?

Upon leaving school James began working full time in a wholesaler as he wasn’t sure at this stage what he wanted to do. James went on to have a number of different jobs in retail which gave him lots of customer service experience, before gaining his current role as a medical administrator, he found this on the NHS Jobs website and James’s vast experience in customer service supported him in his initial application enabling him to carry out his role efficiently

What do they do?

Every day is different for James, covering a variety of tasks throughout the week. Duties include preparing prescriptions ready for the doctor to sign, taking telephone calls throughout the day as well as reception duties which involve James being patient facing, dealing with enquiries, making appointments and arranging blood tests. James uses a computer system throughout the day, ensuring all patient trails are documented, this means that confidentiality is an extremely important part of this role

What’s the best thing about their role?

James feels that the best thing about his role is the satisfaction he gets at the end of each day when he reflects on what he has been able to achieve through the course of the day, as well as knowing that he helps people every day

Where are they going from here?

James has only been in his current role for a year and is really enjoying this role, having been supported by the NHS to attend courses in medical terminology and human factors. James is also planning to attend further training in different areas to enable him to further his career with the NHS
